Satin stitches, also known as a damask stitches, are a series of flat stitches that cover a section of the background fabric. Narrow rows of satin stitch can be made on a sewing machine using a this special satin stitch foot. The foot is designed to glide easily over a fabric that has decorative or heavy stitching.

To appliqué, take a shaped piece of fabric (heart, star, square, circle, etc.) and attach it to a backing piece, both with the right sides facing upward. The foot allows you to see the stitching as it smoothly glides over the two pieces of fabric.
